Spontaneous Nonlinear Scattering Processes in Silica Optical Fibers

چکیده
When light travels in a optical fiber, a fraction of its total power is always scattered to other wavelengths (or polarization) due to material non linearity. Whether that scattering is weak or strong, desirable or not, depends on the situation. One distinguishes (i) scattering stimulated by the presence of a seed wave (at another wavelength or polarization), (ii) spontaneous scattering, and (iii) amplified spontaneous scattering. Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and four-wavemixing (FWM) are examples of stimulated scatterings. Those have been thoroughly studied in the past thirty years and are well summarized in classic nonlinear fiber optics textbooks, e.g. (Agrawal, 2007). Several chapters of this book also deal with specific aspects and applications of stimulated scattering. The present chapter focuses on spontaneous scattering processes, cases (ii) and (iii). The chapter also concentrates on nonlinear scattering in silica fibers because nowadays those are the most common and widely used types of fibers. Gas-filled hollow core fibers (Benabid et al., 2005) and ion doped fibers (Digonnet, 2001) are not considered here, and it is assumed that the fiber has not been subjected to poling (Bonfrate et al., 1999; Huy et al., 2007; Kazansky et al., 1997), so that the main non linearity is of third order. In this context the most important spontaneous nonlinear scattering processes are

Method for measuring the Raman gain tensor in optical fibers
We present a technique to measure the tensor components of the Raman gain spectrum in a short piece of optical fiber. Using this approach, we obtain results for the frequency dependence of the Raman gain tensor in a silica-based fiber for Raman shifts from less than 1 to over 15 THz. We compare these data with measurements of spontaneous Raman scattering in bulk silica and find good agreement f...
متن کاملNonlinear Responses and Optical Limiting Behavior of Ag Nanoparticle Suspension
In this study, the nonlinear optical properties and optical limiting performance of the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in distilled water are investigated. The nonlinear absorption coefficient of the colloid is measured by the Z-scan technique. The optical limiting behavior of the AgNP suspension is investigated under exposure to nanosecond laser pulses at 532 nm. The results show that nonlinear ...
متن کاملFabrication of polymer-SiO2 nanocomposite optical fibers with a new method
At first step polymer optical fibers (POFs) are used in short distance for optical data transmissions. At second step SiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by sonochemical-assisted method. Silica nanoparticles were added to polymer matrix to prepare polymer based nanocomposites. Most of the POF applications are in the medical and electrical devices. There are several methods for fabrication of POFs,...
متن کاملBrillouin Scattering in Polymer Optical Fibers: Fundamental Properties and Potential Use in Sensors
We review the fundamental properties of Brillouin scattering in a perfluorinated graded-index polymer optical fiber (PFGI-POF) with 120 m core diameter. The experiments were performed at 1.55 m telecommunication wavelength. The Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) and the Brillouin bandwidth were 2.83 GHz and 105 MHz, respectively. The Brillouin gain coefficient was calculated to be 3.09 × 10 −11 ...
متن کاملStimulated Raman scattering in an ethanol core microstructured optical fiber.
We show that high efficiency stimulated Raman scattering can be obtained using hollow core photonic crystal fiber with the core filled with a low refractive index nonlinear liquid. This new architecture opens new perspectives in the development of nonlinear functions as any kind of nonlinear liquid media can now be used to implement them, with original properties not accessible with silica core...
